HIWWI Tory Burch Jenna High Heel Boots

{Tory Burch Jenna Boot, $525}

When I think of fall dressing, I can’t help but think about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve actually never even seen an episode, but one night while I was still in high school, I was skimming the channels, probably looking for an episode of Friends or America’s Next Top Model, I randomly landed on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was just about to change the channel again when Sarah Michelle Geller entered the frame wearing the most incredible knee-high brown heeled boots, mini dress and slouchy cardigan. The leaves beneath her boots crunched and it looked like it was under 70 degrees wherever she was, which was pretty much my idea of heaven as a 16-year-old Houston-native that had never seen snow before. The scene ended and SMG was no longer on screen and thus, neither was her amazing ensemble, so I changed the channel, but that scene changed my life...sort of. (A million brownie points to anyone who knows which episode this outfit actually even appeared in—I know you Buffy-philes are out there!!!!).

This week, I discovered these Tory Burch boots and I’m pretty sure my life will never be the same. These remind me so much of the iconic outfit I associate with fall that I couldn’t stop myself from trying to recreate the look for 2012 F/W, even if they cost more than some people’s rent. (If these boots cost more than your rent, you obviously dont live in D.C.)

I just bought this amazing shrug from AllSaints. I like it because it looks cozy, has a cool detail at the neck, and because it’s AllSaints, hello!

{AllSaints Itat Shrug, $120}

I really like the idea of taking something really cozy like this shrug and layering it on top of this structured faux leather shift, since like, leather (and any faux forms of it) are gonna be so huge for fall. Plus the skirt is short and the boots are tall, which says “I’m a little slutty, but I know big words like ‘juxtaposition,’ so I’m also kinda smart, lol!”

{Sanctuary Faux Leather Dress, $158}

I’ve been kind of obsessedies with dark, brooding nail colors for fall, which is why I like this khaki polish. I also kind of love matching your nail color to your shoes. Church ladies, eat your heart out!

{YSL Nail Polish in Khaki Arty, $25}

How ‘bout a hot pink satchel, just to confuse people a little? I don’t think neon is going anywhere for fall, y’all…what do you think??

{Rebecca Minkoff Satchel, $340.99}

Do you know which episode of Buffy Im referring to? Has anyone actually broken out the fall boots yet??? Are you nuts??? Where do you live??

Boston Cream Pie Its One Wicked Pissah of a Cake

Im so glad I cant do a decent Boston accent, otherwise this video recipe for Boston cream pie would have probably been really annoying because I would have done the entire voiceover in it.

This is my quick and easy version of Bostons Pa
rker House Hotels famous cake. Why is it called a pie? Your guess is as good as mine, but what I do know is that a real Boston cream pie is comprised of two layers of sponge cake, not a yellow cake from a boxed mix.So technically this is only two-thirds of a Boston cream pie, but trust me, its the most important two-thirds. In the video, I joke about the cake in this recipe simply acting as a pastry cream and chocolate ganache delivery system. I wasnt joking.

A Boston cream pie is all about the cream and ganache. In fact, heres a tip in case you want to take that idea and run with it – instead of two cakes, just use one. Use a long, serrated knife to split the cake in two, and proceed with the recipe as shown.

By the way, in a testament to just how busy I am, I completely forgot to mention those hairless hands youll see stirring, whisking, and pouring, belong to my wife – the lovely and talented Michele.

Enjoy!

Ingredients:
yellow cake mix, prepared according to directions
For the pastry cream:
1/2 tbsp butter
1 cup whole milk
1 cup whipping cream
6 tablespoons sugar (upon further review weve added another tablespoon of sugar)
2 tablespoon cornstarch
3 eggs
1 or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, or to taste
big pinch of salt
For the chocolate ganache:

Modagam

Modagam
This is the favorite sweet of Lord Ganesha or Pillayar as we call in Tamil. So this is commonly made in all houses in Tamilnadu during Vinayaga Chathurthi. This is different from Poorna Kuzhakkattai which is a sweet stuffed one. Modagam is made with broken rice like Rava and Jaggerry.One of my readers is urgently in need of this recipe, so no more time for stories

Ingredients
Rice (broken like Rava)-2 cups
Jaggerry-2 cups
Water-6 cups (3 cups of water for 1 cup rice)
Grated coconut-1/4 cup
Ghee-3 tablespoons
Broken Green gram-1/4 cup (pasiparuppu)
Cardomom-4 (powder it along with a teaspoon of sugar in the mixie)
Procedure
Wash the rice. Spread it under the fan for an hour in newspaper till the rice gets dried. Those who can’t dry can keep it in microwave for a minute. Put it in the mixi and powder it like rava.
For making the modagam first roast the rava in a tablespoon of ghee for 2 minutes. In a kadai pour 6 cups of water. Add the jaggerry. When the jaggerry water boils strain it using a steel strainer to remove the impurities. After straining pour back the jaggerry water into the kadai and when the water starts boiling add the broken rice and the green gram. Mix well. Add a table spoon of ghee. Keep the flame very low. Close the kadai. The rice will get cooked in 10 minutes. Open the kadai now and then and mix. Once the rice appears to be cooked, add the grated coconut,powdered cardomom and one more table spoon of ghee. Switch of the stove. Allow it to cool for 5 minutes. Make small balls and steam it in idly pan for 8 minutes.

Im A Genie In A Bottle of Wine and The Birth of the Waist Hip

Let me preface this post by ensuring that this is the most flattering picture I was able to get of myself in the most unflattering outfit I have likely worn to date (and thats including the maxi skirt/sweater/headband combo phase I went through freshman year of high school).

I bought the very sheer, black, harem-pant jumpsuit I highlighted in this previous HIWWI post with the intention of wearing it to the Virginia Wine Festival last weekend. It arrived only the day before and because I was already wearing this for the Savor Beer event, I didnt bother trying it on until the morning of.

You can likely imagine the molestation my eyes suffered when I looked at my reflection in said jumpsuit the next morning only to realize it had created the illusion that my hips jutted out several inches farther on either side just where my waist should have been.

{Please notice the bulging waist-hip situation just above my elbow.
Please also acknowledge that this is an unflattering angle of me.}

Looking back, it might have been naive to think that an outfit requiring THREE whole adjectives to describe it could possibly be flattering, but dammit, I was willing to take the risk.

In my defense, I was ill-prepared to pair something underneath the jumpsuit. The intent was to wear a one piece swimsuit--which I dont own--or black bikini bottoms with a tank, but upon seeing how wide the harem pants had made my waist-hips, bikini bottoms with ties on the sides was, in fact, making it worse.

{Saving my look was this sweet hairdo I was rockin. Tutorial coming soon.}

Would I wear harem pants again? Absolutely. Its fun to feel like you can grant people wishes, but next time Ill make sure they sit below my natural waist. Thatd be crucial point number 1.

Furthermore, Im far from giving up on the sheer trend. Therere just too many good garments with sheer panels to throw in the towel just yet, but maybe I wont do it in a full onesie ensemble.

{Also saving my look: this amazeballs face tattoo I got. Just kiddingggggggggg...its face paint.
I was probably the only person over 13 getting one, and I feel pretty good about that}

There really are no fashion mistakes, only fashion lessons, and class? You just got SCHOOLED!!
